Avec Joker: Folie à Deux, Todd Phillips nous livre une suite aussi originale que troublante et fascinante à son Joker (2019). Le succès du premier film a inspiré Todd Phillips a continuer à travailler le personnage, mais également à raccrocher avec les mythes créateurs de ce méchant sacré, némésis absolue du Chevalier Noir de Gotham : Batman. Ainsi, ce deuxième volet plonge encore plus profondément dans la psyché d’Arthur Fleck, explorant la confusion entre la réalité et la folie. Le tout en confrontant le public à des questions sur l’identité du Joker, son héritage, et la société qui le façonne. Notre analyse et explication de ce “Joker 2” va nous amener à voir comment le personnage d’Arthur Fleck s’intègre dans la mythologie de Batman.

Et, petit spoiler, en fin de compte le film reste fidèle à l’essence du personnage du Joker : un mystère sans réponse claire, dont l’origine se perd dans les méandres de la folie humaine.

Une “Folie à Deux” partagée avec le public

Le titre de cette suite n’est pas choisi au hasard. Le terme “folie à deux” (ou psychose induite) est utilisé pour désigner une psychose partagée entre deux individus. Comme nous le dit Wikipedia, c’est “un phénomène psychiatrique résultant de l’adoption de la thématique délirante d’un individu psychotique et du mode de vie qui y est lié par un proche également psychotique”. Ce thème est exploré de manière directe à travers la relation toxique entre Arthur et Lee. Alors qu’Arthur tente de comprendre et d’accepter son identité, Lee le pousse dans une direction opposée, exacerbant sa folie au point qu’il perd tout contrôle de sa propre narration. Perte de contrôle et “folie” que l’on retrouve dans les passages chantés, symbole cinématographique de cette folie, cet autre monde que se créent Arthur et Lee. C’est cette “folie partagée” qui pousse Arthur à rejeter son avocate, la seule personne qui semble véritablement se soucier de lui. Ce rejet symbolise une défaite de Fleck face à une société qui, au lieu de lui offrir de l’aide, l’a transformé en un objet de fascination morbide.

Joker 2 : Joker et Lee

Et cependant, il redevient Fleck à la fin du film. En effet, sur les escaliers, Arthur ne souhaite plus chanter, il est revenu à la réalité après son discours devant les jurés, avant l’explosion du tribunal. A l’inverse, Lee continue à chanter, souhaitant elle-même rester dans cette folie que lui procure l’image, le personnage du Joker.

La naissance de Double-Face dans Joker 2 ?

Dans Joker: Folie à Deux, Harvey Dent apparaît en tant que procureur impitoyable, déterminé à faire condamner Arthur Fleck pour ses crimes, reflétant son rôle habituel dans la mythologie de Batman. Dent est présenté comme un homme de loi rigide, symbolisant l’ordre et la justice absolue, prêt à tout pour voir Fleck condamné à mort. Cependant, son évolution en Double-Face, emblème de la dualité et de la justice corrompue, est subtilement amorcée dans le film.

Lors de l’attentat final au tribunal, où des partisans du Joker attaquent le bâtiment pour libérer Fleck, Dent est pris dans une explosion qui ne le laisse pas indemne. On peut ainsi deviner sur un plan son visage à moitié brûlé par l’explosion. Et si le film ne montre pas explicitement Harvey Dent se transformer en Double-Face, il plante les graines de cette transition.

La proximité de Dent avec la violence et le chaos laisse présager un changement interne, une potentielle rupture psychologique qui pourrait mener à son alter-ego. Todd Phillips joue ici avec l’idée que les événements traumatiques, dans l’univers de Gotham, ont souvent des conséquences drastiques, faisant écho à la manière dont Harvey Dent est devenu Double-Face dans The Dark Knight de Christopher Nolan. Le film laisse ainsi entendre que l’explosion pourrait avoir des répercussions sur sa psyché, ouvrant la voie à une future transformation
