Critique Les 47 ronins (Manga) de Akiko Shimojima et Sean Michael Wilson

La légende des 47 rônin est incroyablement ancrée dans l’histoire et surtout la culture japonaise. Les éditions Budo nous présente la première adaptation sous forme de manga de cette légende qui a traversé les âges.

Résumé

Au 18e siècle, 47 samouraïs vengèrent la mort de leur maître grâce à un complot qu’ils fomentèrent dans le secret durant deux années. Après avoir réussi leur mission, ces 47 samouraïs dépourvus de maître se suicidèrent tous.

Critique

Cette histoire intemporelle porte notamment les valeurs majeures pour lesquelles la culture japonaise est reconnue internationalement : loyauté, le sens de l’honneur, le sacrifice et la persévérance. Cet ensemble de valeurs est représentatif du bushido, le code des samouraïs.

Sean Michael Wilson écrit le scénario de ce manga et Akiko Shimojima dessine les aventures de ses héros. Le résultat ? Le scénario n’apporte rien de nouveau à l’histoire car l’ouvrage se veut authentique et respectueux de l’histoire. On suit donc les péripéties de ces légendes japonaises dans un style qui manque cruellement de dynamisme. Hormis la portée éducative pure qui reste intéressante (même si l’article Wikipédia est bien plus complet) le scénario n’enflamme pas le lecteur.

Dommage car le dessin n’est pas mauvais, mettant bien en avant les expressions et émotions des différents personnages. Cependant, il est bien difficile de reconnaître les personnages entre eux tellement ils semblent identiques… Seul le texte permet de bien être certain de suivre Asano, Kira ou un autre protagoniste. La dessinatrice abuse aussi quelque peu des planches présentant sous de multiples angles une même scène. La pauvreté du texte contraste trop largement avec le dessin expansif.

Finalement, cet ensemble donne un manga assez long à parcourir (pour ne pas dire lire) et dont la trame scénaristique est très ennuyeuse. Ce manga trouvera difficilement son public car n’entre pas dans les détails historiques qu’un roman peu apporter et le récit manque de volume, de rebondissements.

Dans un autre style, nous préférons l’adaptation cinématographique de 2013 avec Keanu Reeves qui souffre du défaut inverse : il s’éloigne trop des faits historiques tout en essayant de conserver une portée authentique…

Les 47 rônin est donc une légende bien difficile à adapter !
